Do you like hockey and asking questions with data? Then join us on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 for the first ever Hockey Analytics Data Sprint, put on in concert with CanucksArmy.com. It’s a day where creative minds come together to look at data and use any tool in their tool-belt to generate an awesome project within a limited amount of time.

It’s more than coding! If you can use Excel, create visualizations, statistical modeling or are able to ask and asnwer questions about data – we want to see you there! The most interest projects will win prizes and all finalized projects will be released open source to the hockey analytics community.

Where

La Casita in Vancouver, Canada has graciously donated us space to use for the day which includes working space and WiFi for teams. The in-person track will take place at La Casita! It’s also a bar/restaurant, so drinks and food is available for purchase throughout the entire sprint.

Schedule

Friday, November 3rd

• There will be an informal social at Central City Pub on Beatty starting at 7 pm.  You’re welcome to attend.

Saturday, November 4th

• 1130 am – Teams arrive, rules and introduction
• 1200 pm – Teams start working
• 6:00 pm – Teams present
• 6:45 pm – Winners announced
• 7:00 pm – Post-event social

Guidelines & Rules

Vancouver Track

• All participants will be held to the Hack Code of Conduct (please read) – respect your fellow sprinters and no behaviour that negatively impacts the event will be expected.
• No individuals – all participants will be put in teams of approximately 3-5. If you want to work with someone specific let us know during registration otherwise you will be matched by expertise you’ve identified during registration. You will be emailed your teammates names and contact the week prior to the event.
• A snapshot of the dataset will be provided 1-2 days before the event so you can prepare before arriving.
• Teams are to arrive for 11:30 am. At 12:00 the dataset will be released and teams have 6 hours to complete their sprint. Final submissions can be tools, applications, models, visualization, software, website, excel charts, excel sheets – anything that demonstrate an analysis of the data.
• At 6:00 pm teams will have 3 minutes to present their final work – the team with the best final product will win a prize. Judges’ decisions will be based on various factors including uniqueness, interesting, value to the community and a “wow”-factor.
• Your final product must be uploaded to dropbox at a future provided link. All products will be released open-source shortly after the event.
• Prizes (to be determined) for Vancouver participants  will be provided to the winning team.

Online Track

• Online participants will follow similar rules to the Vancouver Track.
• Teams can work as individuals or with a team – based on what individuals wish on registration.
• Data will be released at 12:00 pm PST on November 4th, 2017.
• Online participants must submit their final product with a (max) 250 word description to the location provided the day of.
• For online participants the clock stops at 11:59 pm on November 4th, 2017.
• All products will be released open source to the public.
• Prizes for online participants are to be determined.

Registration

As this is the first time we are running this event and the size of our venue spaces are limited to 25 participants for the Vancouver track. The cost is $5 a person which will go towards the costs of running the event. Any remaining funds will be donated to the SPCA.
